SAFE (Sovereign Agroecology Food Empowerment) was born out of decades of grassroots activism by small-scale farmers, workers, and rural communities in South Africa who mobilized around land reform and food sovereignty. Early workshops in the Northern and Western Cape exposed how neoliberal policies deepened inequality, leaving government reforms ineffective. After internal divisions in 2023, movements united under SAFE to create a clear vision: advocating for agrarian reform, food sovereignty, and empowering marginalized communities. Today, SAFE advances sustainable agriculture, youth empowerment, and policy change to build dignified livelihoods, healthy food systems, and resilient communities.
