A Prayer for Travellers
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

In March 2024, I traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, for the very first time in my life. Before the trip, my view of the city was based on travel blogs and social media, so I was curious about the real experience. The trip exceeded my expectations. I saw beautiful landscapes, experienced a mix of cultures, and felt the city's unique energy that is both relaxed and lively. Cape Town made a strong impression on me, and I would like to share the key moments from my visit. This guide highlights popular attractions, lesser-known sites, and some excellent local food. Whether you are just thinking about visiting or have already planned your trip, I hope this guide offers useful advice and inspiration for your own visit to Cape Town.
A First-Timer’s Travel Guide to Cape Town, South Africa: Little About Cape Town
Cape Town is a city where the mountains meet the sea, particularly the beautiful Cape of Good Hope(In the above picture), which is the southernmost part of the African Continent. Cape Town's streets hold a rich history and a mix of cultures. The city is known for its natural beauty and the lively spirit of its urban life. You will see Table Mountain, a flat-topped landmark that stands high above the city, and the vast ocean that touches the coast. For many years, Cape Town has served as a stop for sailors and is now a busy city that welcomes travelers from around the world. Beneath its modern face, the city shows a long history, from the indigenous peoples to colonial times and beyond. Walking through the city, you experience busy markets, street performances, and the smell of local food that fills the air. Whether you are drawn to its famous sites or its quieter spots, Cape Town offers a rich and memorable visit.
The Journey to Cape Town
Traveling to Cape Town is an exciting part of the experience. If you travel from Uganda like I did, you will have a short stop in Nairobi, Kenya. As you fly, you feel a growing sense of anticipation as you approach the city. Your path may include stops in Doha, Dubai, or Addis Ababa. Each stop adds a unique element to the travel experience, and the excitement starts as soon as you arrive at the airport.
Traveling in 2024: Entry Requirements
In 2024, many COVID-19 rules will have eased, so most travelers do not need quarantine or proof of vaccination. However, check with your airline or the South African government website for any updates. If you come from a country like Uganda, you might need to show proof of a yellow fever vaccination. Always ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned visit.
Things to Know Before You Go
Before you set out, consider renting a car if you prefer to explore at your own pace, as the roads are well-maintained. Alternatively, Uber is a reliable choice. English is widely spoken in Cape Town, although you may hear other local languages. Check visa requirements, as many African passport holders need a visa for a stay of up to 90 days. Be aware of load shedding—planned power cuts—and carry a portable charger. Travel insurance is essential, as it is often needed for visa applications.
The Best Time to Visit
Cape Town welcomes visitors all year. The summer months (November to March) offer bright skies and warm weather but may have higher costs. For a quieter trip, consider visiting in April to May or September to October. The winter months (June to August) bring cooler weather and lower prices, with a unique charm that many travelers enjoy.
Where to Stay
Cape Town offers a range of accommodations. I stayed in a shared house, which was simple and comfortable, close to local restaurants and attractions. For a more upscale option, consider a hotel like the Rockefeller Hotel in the city center, where you can enjoy modern amenities and easy access to major landmarks.
